To support Hong Kong’s vision to develop green technology for sustainable development as an international financial center, the HKUST Business School recently convened an industry roundtable, entitled “Navigating the Convergence of Tech, Finance, and Sustainability in Establishing Hong Kong as an International Green Technology and Financial Center”. The event brought together influential leaders from academia, industry, and government to explore the significance of green technology in driving the city’s transition towards a green economy, and engaged over 60 industry participants from across the financial services, sustainability, technology, and fintech sectors through a live broadcast.

The roundtable featured experts including (from right) Dr. King AU, Executive Director of Financial Services Development Council; Mr. Chris BARFORD, Board Member of the FinTech Association of Hong Kong; Ms. Helene LI, Co-Founder and CEO of GoImpact Capital Partners; Prof. TAM Kar Yan, Vice-President for Administration and Business of HKUST; Mr. Jeff TANG, Partner, Market Development Leader of Consulting at Ernst & Young Advisory Services Limited; Mr. Jason TU, Founder and CEO of MioTech, and Mr. Clarence T'AO, Co-Founder of GoImpact Capital Partners (moderator).

The expert panel explored Hong Kong’s unique strengths and opportunities in both technology and finance that position the city as a key player in the Greater Bay Area and the global market, as well as the support and resources needed to build a thriving ecosystem for green tech and finance. The panel also emphasized the importance of fostering cross-sectoral collaboration and nurturing a robust talent pool to accelerate Hong Kong’s green transition and revitalize its economy. The insightful discussion is available for viewing here.

As part of the University’s effort to pioneer technological innovation in green finance, the HKUST Green Finance Research Project has collaborated with the Green and Sustainable Finance Cross-Agency Steering Group established by the Securities and Futures Commission and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority to develop greenhouse gas emission calculation and estimation tools to aid SMEs and financial institutions in effectively managing their environmental impact, in preparation for the upcoming ESG disclosure requirements.

To continue the fruitful discussion, our School will co-host the inaugural Green Tech Summit with industry partners GoImpact and MioTech on October 30 and 31, 2024 in Hong Kong, with the support of the Financial Services Development Council, InvestHK, Cyberport and Stanford Graduate School of Business (GSB) Chapter of Hong Kong. Covering crucial themes like AI, climate tech, clean energy, sustainable supply chain management, green investments, and green talent, this high-level event will bring together key stakeholders worldwide to foster collaboration and catalyze the transition towards a more sustainable economy.
