Recognition encourages faculty members to excel in various aspects. Here are some recent accomplishments of our faculty.

Honoring Impactful Cases

To recognize faculty’s case development efforts, the 2024 HKUST EMBA Alumni Association Award for Best Case was presented to Adjunct Associate Prof. Entela BENZ of the Department of Finance, with her case titled CLP Group: Environmental, Social, and Governance Factors and Their Effects on Valuation (A). The case focuses on how CLP Group explores the integration of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors into equity valuation. The case provides students with the tools to make qualitative judgments regarding ESG considerations in company valuations.

Among other criteria, winning cases are selected based on the number of copies distributed globally through the Thompson Center for Business Case Studies’ distribution partner - Harvard Business Publishing.

Dean’s Faculty Service Award

The Dean’s Faculty Service Award for 2024 went to Prof. Ronald LAU, Associate Professor of Business Education in the Department of Information Systems, Business Statistics and Operations Management (ISOM). This prestigious recognition honors his unwavering dedication and significant contributions to undergraduate education, instrumental support to industry engagement and outreach, and enthusiasm in student mentorship. Serving as the Undergraduate Coordinator for over two decades, his efforts have led to almost a fourfold increase in the number of annual enrollments in the BBA in Operations Management program. The Selection Committee highly commended his tremendous contributions to the School and countless initiatives for the University.

Two ISOM Faculty Stand Out in Research and Service

Assistant Professor Carsten CHONG (left) of the Department of ISOM received the Early Career Award 2024/2025 from Chairman of the Research Grants Council (RGC) Prof. Timothy TONG (right). Prof. Chong’s winning project titled “Robust Inference of Rough Volatility” has been granted over HK$690,000 under the RGC Early Career Scheme (ECS) 2024/25 exercise.

Among the 209 early career researchers funded by the ECS in 2024/25, Prof. Chong is one of the 13 winners of the Early Career Award for his outstanding research projects. The Early Career Award comes with an additional funding of HK$100,000 to develop educational activities, including the training of undergraduate students in conducting research.

Meanwhile, Senior Lecturer YANG Xiaodong, also from the Department of ISOM, has become a member of the newly established Committee of Business Management under the Talent Exchange Center of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, PRC.

The Committee is consisted of 40 members from a range of sectors, including enterprises, think tanks, government agencies, and universities. With a focus on providing support in areas such as project oversight, expert opinion, mentorship, and policy recommendation, the Committee will contribute to the talent development work of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
